LP continues efforts to modernize existing mills by installing enhanced technology. LP is committed to the scheduled implementation of a $250 million investment program intended to reduce costs, improve quality and increase capacity.

The installation of a 300,000 actual cubic feet per minute (ACFM) Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (WESP) at both the Hanceville and Roxboro OSB facilities is providing dramatic reductions in particulate emissions, which carry over to existing regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTO). The RTO units were installed in 1997 to meet clean air requirements and enhance LP’s commitment to a healthy environment. The units mandated substantial amounts of down time for bake-outs and wash-outs of the RTO heat exchange media in order to maintain performance due to the wet and particulate laden OSB dryer exhaust. Furthermore, down time and lost production caused by pressure build up in the RTO units increased electrical costs. Costly replacement of RTO heat exchange media stimulated the need for a better and more economical approach, especially in light of increased market demand for maximum OSB production.

In the spring of 2003 LP completed an extensive evaluation of WESP manufacturers and selected Western Pneumatics to provide and install the first WESP system for the Hanceville facility. Because of OSB market demands and a pre-planned shut down schedule based on the expected RTO media life, an aggressive project schedule was established for the complete installation and initializing of the WESP system.
